The Overthrow of the Kapu system
PAST - Kapu means forbidden' or 'sacred' the Kapu System was much more to the Hawaiian people than just a series of forbidden practices, it helped maintain the favor of the gods, prevented spiritual defilement ( the action of defiling or the state of being defiled ). The Kapu system worked very well for a sense of social control, Everyone in the village knew what their role was. The native people of the land knew what was right and wrong, they knew what they could and could not do. The Kapu system worked for 40 years after the Englishmen came. In November of 1819, Kamehameha II had a feast made on the island of Hawai'i & sat down to eat with the women. Thus, ending the Kapu system. Shortly after that, the heiau ( temples) were destroyed.
This changed the Hawaiian society drastically some ways that it changes was that; Men ate with Women, they did not have celebrations honoring the Gods, Makahiki was not celebrated like usual. Surprisingly, the overthrow of the Kapu did not greatly weaken the ali'i. However, the cultural system that held the Hawaiian people together for over hundreds of years was gone, just like that.
FUTURE : It'll remain the same as it is right now, the men and women will be able to eat together and the women will have equal rights as men and they will not bring back the Kapu system.
